What 225/60R17 means
The inputs are 225 mm nominal section width, a 60-percent aspect ratio, and a 17-inch nominal rim diameter. The R identifies radial construction. The width is not a wheel-width measurement, and the rim number is not the outside diameter of the tire.
Nominal sidewall height is 225 × 60 ÷ 100 = 135 mm. Adding two sidewalls to the 431.8 mm rim gives 701.8 mm (27.63 in) of nominal outside diameter.
A calculated reference
Two 135 mm sidewalls and a 431.8 mm rim sum to 701.8 mm. This decomposition is useful when checking the 225/65R17 comparison: the rim and width stay fixed, and only the sidewall term changes.
